Hackamore Wildlife viewing opportunities are spectacular!

The Hackamore currently offers limitless wildlife viewing opportunities on 22,500 acres of prime wildlife habitat on three ranches in western Oklahoma. The Hackamore offers you a rare opportunity to observe countless species of the shortgrass, mixed grass, high plains regions of Oklahoma. The native prairie is rich in species diversity! Whether you are a serious birder, botanist, herpetologist, or just a beginner, opportunity abounds.

We offer a rare opportunity to view lesser prairie chickens from our permanent viewing blinds set up on several booming grounds (Leks). You have a chance to observe the lesser prairie chicken on booming grounds where they have returned each spring for hundreds of years to perform their courtship ritual! Over the years, the prairie chicken has suffered an estimated 90 percent loss of habitat. You have a unique opportunity to view the birds in some of the last remaining prairie chicken habitat in North America. Peak viewing of the lesser prairie chicken is during the months of late March, April, and May. Book early to see this amazing bird!

Active prairie dog towns offer an array of wildlife viewing. On the towns you may view blacktailed prairie dogs, burrowing owls, blacktailed jackrabbits, kangaroo rats, badgers, buteos, accipiters, falcons, coyotes, and a multitude of high plains species of wildlife. If you are lucky, you may even see an occasional prairie rattlesnake!

The Hackamore offers wildlife viewing for hundreds of species of birds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. Whether you are a beginning birder or an accomplished ornithologist, you will find spectacular opportunities on your choice of ranches. If you are into mammalogy or herpetology we have a place for you too! You may even have an opportunity to help us with our bird lists. If you are interested in prairie species for your bird lists, we have the prairie and wildlife in an untamed, relaxed, western setting.

Just a few other wildlife species you may see are: Scissor tailed flycatcher, mountain bluebird, loggerhead shrike, burrowing owls, prairie rattlesnake, horned lark, nuthatch, horned lizard, wrens, mockingbird, phoebe, turtles, junco, warbler, lizards, meadowlark, waxwing, skink, racerunner, cowbirds, crow, blind snake, vulture, kinglet, rat snake, flycatcher, bluejay, kingsnake, herons, sandhill crane, western massasauga, shorebirds, sandpipers, pheasant, cuckoo, owls, swifts, coyotes, bobcats, deer, turkey, pheasant, furbearers, porcupines, and badgers.

The Hackamore can customize your birding and wildlife viewing trip to fit your needs. Prairie chicken blinds can accommodate up to four persons per day. We can accommodate large groups for general wildlife viewing an all ranches.

A key feature of the Hackamore is that we book a limited number of days and individuals each year in order to maximize your quality outdoor experience. Quality, to the Hackamore, is offering unique outdoor experiences in an environment where you have plenty of wide-open spaces to yourself.
